The new homeowner will never see much of this week's work. It is in the walls, under the floor and in the attic. All of it is important, necessary and expensive. John invested several hours underneath the house working to shore up the foundation located under the existing bath and the front porch. This is not surprising as this house has had 120 years of continuous use. Our electrician spent lots of time in the attic -- replacing knob and tube wiring with Romex that will meet current code. The plumbers ran new gas pipe throughout and under the house to accommodate a tankless water heater and a gas stove. They also replaced the lead water supply line we found outside and ran new waterlines inside for the master bath that we are adding and for the new kitchen.
Now that all this work is complete, the walls can be closed up and flooring installed. The house will look very, very different next week.
John found this flooring in a small room at the back of the house under a layer of carpet, under a layer of tile. I think it is just beautiful, and we are carefully pulling back the two layers on top to see if it can be saved.
