OFF AND ON

We pulled away years of obsolete upgrades to reveal the home’s almost 100-year-old charm. Off with the aluminum siding. Off with the wrought iron railings. Off with the old linoleum floor. On with low VOC paint and refinished floors. On with a new kitchen laid out for cooking and entertaining. On with a new roof, new windows, and two and a half new baths along with an upgrade for the existing bath.

DOWN and up

The floor plan was reworked to provide better traffic flow, and a large master suite on the first floor was created. We installed a cook’s kitchen and created a breakfast area. We captured the former attic space and transformed the area into a light-filled loft, complete with a full bath. The basement was thoroughly cleaned and painted.

WHAT YOU CAN See

The front porch was torn off and replaced. A new retaining was added in front. The free-standing, two-car garage was restored to service by repairing the roof, replacing the siding and servicing the door. The studio space behind the garage received a facelift. The covered patio was reworked and a space for a wide-screen TV was added. We brought the landscaping in the front and back yards to life by replacing and adding to the existing plantings.

WHAT YOU CAN’t

The waterline was upgraded and the electrical service updated. All work this was done to code and under permit. The HVAC unit was cleaned and serviced, along with a mini-split system to serve the upstairs. Insulation was added.

We want to thank the great people and local businesses we worked with in taking this house apart and putting it back together, particularly during the adverse Covid 19 conditions: Arlington Electric; K&K Plumbing; Mary Davis of C. Howard Davis Home Appraisals; Midtown Hardwood Floors; Riteway HVAC; Rick Cogswell; Bret Ragsdale; Shelley Rothman of Griffin Clift, Everton and Maschmeyer, PLLC; and English Garden Landscaping.

And here’s to the national retailers we frequent—many of the store employees know us by name—Lowe’s, Home Depot, Floor and Decor, and PPG Paints.

We have loved meeting the neighbors and learning the history of the house! We appreciate your support and sharing your stories. Many thanks — John, Evan and Jane
